Five for Friday!!

Can you believe it's Friday already?!  I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs for Five for Friday!

1.  Back to work, back to work!  Our inservice days started this week.  We had lots of meetings and my new planner got a LOT of use! :)  We also had Open House yesterday, so I got to meet my new kiddos!!  I'm excited for Tuesday to get the year started!

2.  I got the cutest pair of shoes!  I love, love, love them!!!

3.  I finished up my moving word wall!  I'm so super excited about it!  I got the idea from Elizabeth at Kickin' it in Kindergarten.  All the words are on rings, so the kids can take them down to find the word they need or even to practice them!  Right now, I only have our kindergarten review words up, but I will be adding more as we learn them. :)

4.  Last weekend we went hiking!  There were lots of waterfalls and the views were ahh-mazing.  It was beautiful!!

5.  I made little melted crayons attached to a bookmark to give out at Open House!  I forgot to take a picture of the completed bookmark, so just imagine there is a cute little crayon in the empty space! :)  The bookmarks are a freebie in my TpT Store!!

The crayons were pretty easy to make.  I put a bunch of old crayons in warm, soapy water.  This helps to get the wrapper off.

Some of the wrappers just fell right off.  Others I had to pick off.  Your nails won't like it ;)  Cut up the crayons into little pieces.

Put them in your baking dish.  I found mine at Hobby Lobby!!  I overfilled them just a little so that the crayons would be a little thicker.

***Make sure you put a baking sheet underneath before putting it in the oven!!!  It will be super liquidy when you take it out and you will get it everywhere if you don't have the pan!

I put them in the oven at 250 for about 15 minutes.  Be careful when you take them out!

Let them cool and then pop them out.  They come out so cute!!

Attach to the bookmark and you're done!! :)

Have a fabulous weekend!!

Tried it Tuesday: Blending Buddies!

Today was my first official day back!  My room is so SO close to being ready, but it's not quite ready yet for my classroom reveal!  Don't worry, it will be soon! :)

I wanted to share these little things I like to call the Brilliant Blending Buddies!!! :)  Last year, one of our PD days was with our assistant superintendent, who has the most amazing ideas ever!  The Brilliant Blending Buddies are for readers who are struggling with sounding out and blending the sounds together.

They're so super easy to make!  All you need are foam sheets {or felt} and pom poms.  I got my foam sheets at Hobby Lobby.  {I just cut them in half so the finished ones are about 2 inches X 6 inches.}  Hot glue some pom poms on and you're good to go!

The Brilliant Blending Buddies are super easy to use too!  Here's how they work!

Say a student is stuck on the word cat.  They grab a Brilliant Blending Buddy and sound out each letter as they touch a pom pom.  {I have ones with 3 and 4 pom poms.}

So they touch the first pom pom and say:

Then the second:

 And the last!

Then then go back to the beginning and slide their finger across the bottom and blend the sounds together.

It's so simple and easy and IT WORKS!

Last year I used them in my reading groups and had them available for the kids to use if they wanted to when reading on their own.  A few even asked to take one home!

I also have a set of Brilliant Blending Buddies with four pom poms.  I used these ones for words with beginning or ending blends.  The rule was, you have to wrap up the two beginning sounds {or the two ending sounds depending on the word}.  So if you were sounding out stop, you would sound out /s/ /t/, then circle your finger around the two pom poms and blend them.  Then you would sound out the o and p and blend the whole word.

I was amazed at how well these little things helped!!  Link up with Fourth Grade Flipper and share something you've tried!! :)

Mailbox Makeover & Wiggly Readers!

I have a to do list about a mile long.  I'm not kidding!  But before I tackle any more of it, I wanted to share a few things with you!!

I love my classroom mailboxes, but I never really liked the labels they came with.  This year they were really starting to peel and I couldn't take it anymore!  So I Washi taped them!!

Here they were before.

I know, not so pretty huh.

I used a razor blade to scrape off the old stickers.  It was a little tricky, so be careful if you do it!  :)  Then I cut the Washi tape into about two inch pieces.  I stuck it on and added a little yard sale dot to write the number on.

The tape is a little hard to see in the picture, so here's a close up!

Ooooo pretty :)  I wish the tape wasn't quite so see-through, but my mailboxes love their makeover! ;)

I also found these little guys at Michaels.

I'm going to use them as little reading pointers!  I'll have the kids put them on their fingers to help them follow along during reading groups.  They are going to LOVE them!!!!

READ Sign!

Have you stopped by Teachers Pay Teachers for the awesome sale that's been going on?!  I bought way too much so much stuff!!  I'm super excited about my new clip art sets from Melonheadz, Krista Wallden, and Ashley Hughes!  I have so many ideas for my upcoming projects :)  What did you purchase?

Here's a little something I made awhile back but I don't think I shared!  I'm sure you've seen these little READ letters floating around!  I've seen so many different versions and I love them all!  I had to make some for myself!!

Aren't they adorable?!  They were so easy to make too!
  • If you don't like the wood color of the letters, paint the backs and sides {I painted each letter a different color!}
  • Then trace the letters {upside down} on scrapbooking paper and cut them out.
  • Mod Podge the wood and stick your letters on carefully!  Let it dry
  • Mod Podge on top of the paper.  {I did this twice.}
  • Then spray with Mod Podge sealer so it's not so sticky!

Add some ribbon and you're done!!  I can't wait to hang them in my library! :)

Five for Friday & Blogger Exchange!

It's Friday Saturday!!  That means I have one more week until it's time to report back to school!  Technically, I already have :)  I've been going in almost every day over the last two weeks to get unpacked and set up.  I can't wait to share my finished room with you!!

Friday Saturday also means it's time to link up with Doodle Bugs for Five for Friday!!

1. I went to Michaels on Sunday to use  my 25% off everything coupon.  I didn't really need anything, but I couldn't pass up the coupon :)  I got a ton of Scentos markers for 20 cents each!!  I saw this storage unit too.  I didn't get it, but the more I thought about it the more I needed it :)  So I went back!  It is PERFECT for all my teacher supplies!!!  {AND it was only $25!} Now I'm debating getting another one for my crafts supplies at home :)

2.  Last weekend we went on our yearly kayaking/camping trip at the Saco River.  It's the highlight of every single summer :)

3.  I posted some new clip art in my TpT store last night!  :)

4.  I've been so busy the last few weeks that I never linked up with Covered in Glitter and Glue for the Blogger Exchange!!!  My exchange buddy was Mrs. Price from Mrs. Price's Kindergators.  She sent me so many fun goodies!!!

I love the pretty pink box all decorated :)  I love the little pink and green magnets!  I have them on my desk at school already!  I tried out the fun colored dry erase markers on my new easel...LOVE THEM!! :)  I love, love, love everything.  Thank you Mrs. Price! :)

5. I haven't put much up on the walls at school yet, but I did hang my Colorful {Chevron} Alphabet!  It's so bright and colorful....I love it :)

One more thing before I go!!!  I have a freebie for you :)
I made this banner for my Word Work area.  One of my followers asked that I also include an editable banner too, so I did! :)  Grab it here!

Happy Friday!!!
