Math Monday!

Happy Monday friends!!
Happy MATH Monday!
Happy HALLOWEEN Week Monday!  ;)

I am LOVING Deirdre's Math Monday link up!  Head over and check it out! :)

Every year I have read "Go Away Big Green Monster" with my kids and then we've made our own monsters.  I always, always do them early in October so I can have them up all month on display.  Somehow I haven't gotten to them yet this year.  *sad face*

So I decided to change it up a little this year!
{I promise this has to do with math!!!!}

First we read these two stories.

Then we watched this What Makes Ten? video to remind ourselves of the ten buddies.

{Your kids will LOVE it, I promise.  Mine beg me to watch it.  Check, baby, check, baby, it!! ;)}

THEN I told them that we WERE going to make a monster like in the book.

They thought I meant we weren't doing it anymore.  They all went {AWWWWWW} so sadly.

Then I told them we're actually going to make TWO!

As in TWO ten buddy monsters!!

So they each picked a pair of ten buddies.  They made two monsters and labeled each monster with one number from the pair. (So they could do 6 on one monster and 4 on the other or 3 on one and 7 on the other, whichever one the chose!)

My only rule was that the buddies have to be holding hands because they're TEN BUDDIES and they are BFFs and they NEVER want to be apart.  I may have been a little overdramatic. ;)

When they finished their monsters, they had to use graph paper to color the matching Cuisenaire Rods to show that the two numbers they chose make ten.

Now I can hand these guys out on display for longer because they aren't really that Halloween-ish, right?! :)

Math Monday {Doubles!}

It's time to link up with Deirdre over at A Burst of First for this week's Math Monday!!

We've been working really hard to learn our doubles facts.  When I saw doubles clip art at Scrappin' Doodles, I HAD to have it!!! These are the doubles posters I've been using with my kiddos!

The kids absolutely love them!

You can get them here: Doubles {Posters & Mini Books!}!

This pack also comes with mini posters and two mini books.  The first book has the doubles pictures and number sentence.  The kids have to fill in the answer.

The second book is a doubles song!

My kids also LOVE this song on YouTube: Doubles! Doubles!
If you haven't heard it yet, you NEED TO!!!  The kids are constantly singing it! :)

Blog Hop {Freebies Galore!}

Welcome back to the Friday Fall Freebie Blog Hop!  This week will bring you more fabulous freebies! :)

This week I have a fun pumpkin craftivity for you!  I inherited this craft from the teacher who retired before me.  She was amazing and I know you will love this craft!! :)

I've done this craftivity every year after exploring the inside of pumpkins with my kiddos.  After seeing what the insides actually look like, they get to create their own pumpkin and label it!  You can get it here: Parts of a Pumpkin {a craftivity!}

Stop by Meet Miss Parker for the next freebie! :)

Math Monday!

I know, I know, it's TUESDAY!  But I had yesterday off from school and I was so busy I didn't get a chance to link up with Deirdre for her Math Monday linky!

This week I'm sharing an addition anchor chart!  My kids are PROS at writing their addition facts horizontally.  Vertically, however, they kept getting stuck.  We've been practicing, practicing, practicing, but they just didn't seem to understand how to write it!

Here's what I came up with!

I've been calling this the "upstairs, downstairs way."  Original, right?! :)  The addends go in the house, one upstairs and one downstairs.  The sum goes in the basement.  Many of my kiddos were writing the plus sign between the two numbers, like we do when we write them horizontally.  But WHO invited him in the house?!  That silly little plus sign needs to wait outside and knock on the door before barging in!!!!!

It's silly, but it WORKED!!!

Link up with Deirdre for her Math Monday linky!

Our Halloween-themed activities are in full swing this week :)  I know, it's a little early, but the kids are SUPER excited every time I pull out a new Halloween center or game to work on!

We've really, really been working on our skip counting the last few weeks. Today I handed out these skip counting cards to the kids.  We sat in a circle and had a "race" to see how fast we could finish each set.  They were so fast!!  I love when they get so excited about learning :)

This center is part of my Spine Chilling Math Centers pack!!

There are four centers included:
Odd and Even Sort
Addition True/False Sort
Ten Frame Match
Skip Counting by 2's, 5's and 10's

Here's a peek! :)

I also have a fun little fire safety freebie for you!  It's a making words game to go along with all your fire safety plans for this week :)

A Little Halloween! :)

I've really, really been trying to be consistent with my blog posts, but I haven't been very successful!  Do you ever feel like there's not enough time in the day?!

Today I started a Halloween-y project with my kiddos and I just HAD to share it with you!  I got the idea from Fun Family Crafts.

I'm so excited about how cute they came out, that I'm going to show you before I tell you how we made them :)

Aren't they ADORABLE!!!!  The greens are paint samples (thank you Home Depot!).  I grabbed a bunch of different shades so that each would  be a little different.  I had all the paper cut for my kiddos and we went through one step at a time.  I told them this project was ALL about following directions (and the did an amazing job listening!)  My one rule was no saying "I can't!"  I love teaching them that it may look tricky to cut out, but they CAN do it!

1. We started with the black mouth.  I had them keep one edge straight and modeled how to cut a wavy line.  We glued that down and cut out two teeth.

2.  Then I showed them how to cut out triangles to make the hair.

3.  Eyes next!  Fold white paper in half and imagine a circle on it.  Carefully, sloooowly cut around.  I showed them that it makes two eyes and one said, "It's like magic!!"  This was my favorite part.  They started off looking at me like "yeah, right, I can't do that" {but they didn't say it...that was the rule ;) }.  Then they tried and DID do it.  Lots of them held it up and were so excited to show that they CAN do it. :)

4.  Then we did the eye brows.  I had them keep one side straight and we cut the other side with a little curve.

5.  Last we did the nails!  We folded black paper in half and cut two T's.

We ran out of time to add the pupil in the eyes and write about them and they were so disappointed!!  I can't wait to see their writing tomorrow :)

{I also got orange paint samples for pumpkins and white for mummies!!}
Have a super week!
